Managing Director Derek Llambias told the club's official website: "Everyone at Newcastle United is absolutely delighted that Alan has taken on this challenge.

"Already there is a buzz around the club and the city. The news has given everyone a massive boost."

While Shearer arrives back at St James' Park, executive director Dennis Wise is on his way out after just over a year with the club.

A short statement from United read: "Newcastle United can confirm that Dennis Wise has left his position as executive director (football).

"The club would like to take this opportunity to wish Dennis well for the future. There are no plans to appoint a replacement in this role."
